In a commentary, SMU PhD candidate in psychology Sean Lee and SMU Assistant Professor of Psychology (Education) Andree Hartanto opined that in addition to the various measures advised by experts to minimise infection and transmission of the novel coronavirus COVID-19, we can also boost our immunity through psychological means – specifically, through inculcating positivity. Citing their study published in Scientific Reports, fostering positive emotions, such as gratitude, amidst stressful life events can serve to buffer its negative impacts on a biomarker indicative of one’s physical health. They also suggested five steps that can help to reduce crippling fear and breed a constructive sense of cautious optimism.
